How to Talk About What You Do Without Sounding Salesy
This week, I went live to share something that made me excited, proud, and a little emotional.
Every Wednesday inside my Facebook group, I give our members a fill-in-the-blank sentence. Not a pitch prompt. Not a content challenge.
Just a clear and honest way to share what they do without sounding salesy.
And let me tell you these women SHOWED UP.
They didn’t sell.
They shared.
And because of that, what they wrote had power!
I read each one out loud, and I couldn’t stop thinking: “They are doing it! This is what happens when you train your brain to communicate clearly.”
It’s one sentence. But it forces you to think like a leader.
It reminds you of who you help, what they’re struggling with, and how you can move them forward.
And when you can say that clearly, consistently, and confidently?
Clients find you. Opportunities open. Your Momentum Builds.
Here's is what they shared (and why it works):
The full ‘Show and Tell’ fill in the blank sentences/answers are in the Business Growth Collective Facebook group along with a live spotlight on many others. If you're not a member it’s free here is the direct link to join.
1. "If you’re an overwhelmed solo professional struggling to organize your daily tasks, here’s what I’d suggest today: consider delegating those tasks to free up your time, reduce stress, and focus on the work that drives your business forward....” >This is a perfect example of meeting someone in their chaos and offering a calm, empowering solution. No overexplaining. It’s clear, actionable, and grounded in real experience.
2. “If you're a homeschooling parent, struggling with what art supplies are needed, here's what I'd tell you today: I can give you ideas for a basic supply list and overview of art processes used in elementary art....” >Love this. It’s practical and helpful. She’s not trying to sell a class. She’s helping overwhelmed parents by removing a barrier and giving them clarity.
3. “If you’re a Nurse Coach who’s taken messy action and built a business that’s working... but you’re now struggling to organize, scale, and keep up behind the scenes here’s what I’d tell you today: You were never meant to do this alone…” >This one is so well done. She affirms her client’s boldness, then reframes structure and support as the next right move. She’s not selling help she’s inviting growth.
4. “If you're a travel advisor struggling with burnout and feeling pulled in too many directions, here's what I'd tell you today: Make a list of tasks that drain you most and pick just one to delegate or systemize this month....” >This is wise and approachable. She’s not trying to fix everything. Just one task, one action. That builds trust and momentum and that’s leadership.
5. “If you're a parent of a special needs kiddo struggling with what will happen if you were to pass away, here's what I'd tell you today: don't just get an estate plan, get a funeral plan as well…” >So powerful. She’s not selling...she’s protecting. And by offering clear direction, she’s giving people peace of mind in one sentence.
So why does this matter?
Because if your people don't get what you do, they can't buy from you.
This exercise trains your brain to stop sounding like a brochure and start sounding like you. It helps you speak to your people like the expert guide they've been searching for.
Clarity builds connection.
Connection builds trust.
Trust leads to clients.

“I took advantage of one of Dawn's fill-in-the-blank prompts and booked a discovery call that very week. Rather than focusing on selling, I simply answered the question. That approach made all the difference.” - Wendy R. [Read More]
