As we approach the end of the year, I’ve been reflecting on what’s helped me continue to grow and evolve as a business owner. One lesson that stands out is embracing change and flexibility, especially when things are unplanned.
I was recently on a strategy call with a potential client, and they asked me, “How do you manage to do all of this—coaching, providing services, and running a business?” My answer? It’s all about systems, boundaries, and focus.
After 25 years in business and nearly 15 years of coaching, I’ve learned how to balance a wide range of clients—from small business owners to non-profits—by setting clear priorities and creating streamlined workflows. These systems keep me—and my clients—on track, whether I’m coaching, providing services, or managing projects across different industries.
The key takeaway here is that growth and success aren’t just about having a plan. They’re about being open to adapting your approach as circumstances change. Flexibility is just as important as structure in building a sustainable business.
As you look ahead to the new year, here are a few actionable steps to help you reflect and move forward:
1. Reflect on the Past Year: Take some time to review what worked well and what didn’t. What lessons have you learned? Write them down and use them to shape your plans for the year ahead.
2. Create Efficient Systems: Clear systems and workflows are essential for running a business or balancing side projects. Setting priorities and organizing tasks allows you to stay focused and productive.
3. Set Boundaries and Focus: Protect your time by setting boundaries that help you maintain balance. Focus on what matters most, stay aligned with your core goals, and remain open to adjustments when needed.
4. Embrace Flexibility: Understand that plans will shift, and that’s okay. One of the greatest strengths you can cultivate is the ability to adapt, pivot, and find opportunities in the unexpected.
Over the years, I’ve learned that the right systems, boundaries, and flexibility don’t just help you stay on track—they help you thrive, no matter your stage. Whether you’re building or growing, these principles can support you in making the most of every opportunity and help you stay away from shiny object syndrome.
