The List That Built My Business

Last week, while cleaning out my office, I stumbled across an old notebook from the very first year of my business (over 25 yrs). Inside, I had written a list of people I wanted to stay connected with: women I admired, peers who had encouraged me, and even potential clients who had shown interest in what I did.

What surprised me most wasn’t the size of the list. It was the people behind it.

These were people I had conversations with, prayed for, supported, and encouraged. Some became clients. Others became collaborators and powerful referral partners. And a few became lifelong friends.

Not because I had a fancy funnel. Not because I dropped thousands on ads or created the perfect graphics. Not because I posted 24/7 or ran myself ragged at networking events just to “be seen.”

It happened because I invested in them as people. I showed upI caredI built real relationships.

And that’s what created growth that no marketing hack or algorithm ever could!

Somewhere along the way, we started treating business
like a numbers game. Followers, leads, engagement… it’s easy to get so caught up chasing the metrics that we forget the thing that actually moves our business: people.

I know because I’ve been there. I spent way too much time stressing over the perfect post, tweaking subject lines, or wondering if the algorithm hated me. But none of that ever booked me a client. What did? Building genuine relationships.

Your business will grow when you stop chasing numbers and start connecting with humans. Metrics matter, sure and we should be tracking what is working and not. But they’re not the driver. Connection is.

So today, let’s reset together. Forget the algorithm for a moment. Let’s focus on the conversations and connections that will actually bring clients through the door. I’m here to walk with you.

Ready? Let’s dive in.

Here’s your Relationship Marketing Reset:

➡ Identify 3 people you want to deepen relationships with intentionally. This could be referral partners, peers, or dream clients.

➡ Ask yourself: How can I nurture these connections this week? (Send a check-in message, share a resource, celebrate a win, or remind them you see them.)

➡ Keep it simple. One genuine message goes further than 100 “strategic” ones. You need 3 strong connections that will continue to grow over time.
When you’re reaching out, don’t overthink the “perfect message” or “pitch them”. Start with genuine curiosityAsk how they’re doing, celebrate something you’ve noticed them share, or send encouragement about a recent win. This doesn’t have to be a long message; even a quick voice note, mail a note or DM can make someone feel seen.

And here’s the kicker: don’t go in expecting anything in return.

Relationship marketing works best when you detach from outcomes.

Your only goal is to build trust and connection. The opportunities that flow from those conversations will come naturally.

✔ Pro tip: Write these names down in your calendar, lead tracker, notebook, planner, or even your phone. Don’t leave it to chance. Making connections is a priority.

When you shift your focus from numbers to people, you’ll start to see opportunities, clients, and collaborations flow in ways you couldn’t have planned.

If you want more support creating a marketing plan that feels this personal and still brings consistent clients that’s exactly what we’re doing inside the Business Momentum Blueprint. You don’t have to choose between relationships and results. You get both.
