Twenty-five years ago, when I started my business, I had a vision of what success looked like, but the day-to-day tasks quickly became overwhelming, and I lost sight of what truly mattered—building relationships. Whether online or in person, networking was key. I spent so much time behind the scenes that I neglected to engage with my audience.
It wasn’t until I started blocking time for both in-person networking and consistent online communication that I saw real momentum. That shift helped me connect, stay top of mind, and grow my business in ways I hadn’t imagined. It taught me that business isn’t just about posting—or, back then, mailing- it’s about meaningful conversations that create real opportunities.
Networking online isn’t all that different from in-person networking—yet many business owners treat it as if it is. When you meet people at an event, you don’t immediately shove a business card in their face. (At least I hope not!) You introduce yourself, engage in conversation, and naturally find moments to share what you do. The same approach applies to online groups.
But here’s where many business owners struggle: They post once, get a little engagement (or sometimes none), and move on, thinking, well, that didn’t work. They assume visibility should be instant because it’s the internet. But just like in-person networking, relationship-building takes time. Here’s how it can work for you.
3 simple ways to start conversations that actually lead to business growth—without feeling pushy!
1. The “Tell Me More” Approach
Instead of offering advice or promotion right away, ask follow-up questions. If someone shares a win or challenge, respond with curiosity.
💬 Example: “That’s amazing! What was the biggest shift that helped you hit your first $5K month?”
👉 Why it works: It encourages further conversation and makes you memorable.
2. The “Shared Experience” Approach
People connect over shared experiences. Share your own story or a personal insight that aligns with the discussion.
💬 Example: “I used to struggle with time management too! A simple change that helped me was time-blocking tasks based on energy levels instead of urgency. Have you tried anything like that?”
👉 Why it works: It shows your expertise without being pushy and builds connections.
3. Comment with Curiosity (Instead of Just Liking)
Instead of just leaving a “love this!” comment, go deeper. Ask a thoughtful question that invites further discussion.
💬 Example: If someone shares about launching a new product, ask: “What’s one thing that surprised you most about the process?”
👉 Why it works: It sparks deeper conversation, builds relationships, and leads people to inquire about your business naturally.
Consistent Follow-Up: A Critical Piece
One mistake I often see with my clients is hesitation to follow up. Their mindset starts spiraling: They must not be interested if they don’t answer. My offer may not be good enough. Maybe I’m being annoying.
But that’s not the case at all.
People are busy, forget, and get distracted. Following up isn’t about pushing—it’s about staying visible and continuing the conversation.
Reframing Follow-Ups: Instead of thinking, “If they didn’t respond, they’re not interested,” try: “They might be busy. Let me check in and keep the conversation going.” This small mindset shift can completely change how you approach follow-ups and lead to better results!…… Continue reading by subscribing to the “Profitable Prospective newsletter” below.
